Crashes involving impaired drivers are a leading cause of fatalities in Canada. Every day, approximately 3.5 Canadians are killed in an alcohol- or drug-related incident on public roads. During the busy grad season, young Canadians are especially at risk of being involved in a car accident. In fact, MADD Canada states that most young people are likely to be killed or injured in crashes during the summer months. Fortunately, there are road safety tips that you can follow to ensure all parties arrive at their destination safely.

1. Plan a Ride Beforehand

Graduation celebrations often last all month, with several events leading up to the ceremony in June. If you are a parent, make sure your child knows that you do not want them travelling in a car with anyone who is impaired. Let your child know that you will pick them up, without question, should he or she call and ask for a ride. Better yet, plan to pick your child up from the graduation events, which provides peace of mind for both of you.

2. Take a Taxi Instead

Planning a night out? If you know there will be drinking, ensure they take a taxi home after the celebrations. In Vancouver, there are several cab options available, and ride-sharing service Uber also has recently come to the area. You can also download The RIDE App, which is sponsored by MADD Canada. The app allows you to book nearby taxis and find a ride anywhere.

3. Choose a Designated Driver

Deciding on a designated driver before you head out ensures a fun, safe time for everyone. Designated drivers save lives every day by increasing road safety and keeping impaired drivers off the streets. Make sure this person is someone you can trust to remain sober the entire night.

4. Don’t Let Friends Drive Impaired

If you’ve noticed that a friend is attempting to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs, protect others by taking his or her keys. Your friend might be upset, but the risk of putting others in danger is too great. You can even ask your friend to give you his or her keys before the event begins if there will be drinking.
